Robert Lloyd Corkin Visual Arts Center
69 Middlesex Road, Chestnut Hill, MA
Project Description
This project was a $1.6M, 2800sf, ground up art studio. In order to meet strict zoning requirements, the new building was re-constructed on the original footprint. It was important that this building be designed to maintain the historic character of the original, late 1800's carriage house on the three sides that faced the neighborhood. The north side of the building, by contrast, was given a two-story wood curtain wall, illuminating the major studio spaces, and providing views to the wooded hillside beyond. The mix of old and new is most visible at the upper level, where reclaimed lumber rafters carry the eye up to the cupola above. The project includes two 2-d studios, and a ceramics studio. Anticipated completion will be March 2009.
Testimonials
“It is a pleasure working with a contractor who brings the same kind of hands-on
attention to detail during construction that we do during design. Your project team was
pro-active in identifying questions or potential conflicts early, allowing us to make
informed decisions before work began. And your sensitivity to the array of campus and
neighbor concerns was highly appreciated by the school.“
